NSU Women's Basketball

A Fresh Start

By Joe Cook

Going into her second year as head coach for the Spartans head coach Tara Owens is optimistic after a year of growing pains. Last year the Spartans won only 5 games and had one lone victory against a MEAC opponent. For most of the season they were without out a full roster due to injuries and player suspensions.

NORFOLK, Va. - Jaashawn Jones' 1-yard touchdown run with 26 seconds left capped a furious Delaware State Rally, and the Hornets defeated Norfolk State for the sixth straight time, 34-28 on Saturday afternoon at Dick Price Stadium. The game was eerily similar to last year's game between the teams, with DSU (4-6, 4-3 MEAC) rallying from an 18-point second-half deficit to steal a game that NSU (4-7, 3-5) appeared to have in hand.

Kobe Bryant: Ascension

By Oyebola Ande

After the 1997-1998 season, when "His Airness" retired from the Chicago Bulls, only one name has remained constant. One name has reigned supreme. One name has struck fear in the hearts of players. One name has caused coaches sleepless nights. One name has always and forever will be synonymous with Michael Jordan.

In order to get the inside of what life is like as a track star, The Spartan Echo spoke with Tyquan Oxendine, a current member of Norfolk State University's track team.

Vick wants to play, but what team would risk it?

Michael Vick lives in a prison in Kansas, making 12 cents an hour while plotting his return to the NFL. His houses and farms will soon be gone, the two yachts are history, and he's down to his last couple of Range Rovers. A race horse he bought for $60,000 died of colic, the Atlanta Falcons are still trying to hit him up for millions they paid him, and the IRS and the state of Georgia want nearly $1 million in back taxes.

NSU thrashes Morgan State at home

By Joe Cook

The Spartans blew out the Morgan State Bears at Dick Price Stadium on Saturday 35 - 9. You would never know it was a blow out if you looked at some of these statistics. The Spartans (4-6, 3-4 MEAC) only garnered 184 yards of offense and they committed 13 penalties that covered 100 yards. The time of possession went to the Spartans by only a minute and a half. So how did the Spartans put 35 points on the board and hold their opponent to a single digit score? A swarming tenacious defense and an opportunistic offense is the explanation.

Football: Girls can play too

By Tiffany Cooper

It's 2008 and girls are playing football. Norfolk State University provides intramural football teams for girls that take football just as seriously as men. In particular, offensive linebacker and NSU business major, Shameka Lavonne Hunter, was interested.

CIAA and Chowan University make history

By Brittany Jones

This football season promises to be a historic one for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). You may wonder exactly what is it that makes 2008's football season so different from prior seasons. Perhaps it's the addition of Chowan University, a predominately white university, into the historically black conference.

The NBA game just isn't the same

By Dorica Grimes

I used to be a huge NBA fan. My love for the game used to be intense, but recently that has all changed. It used to be all about the game, but the media has clouded all of that and the players just are not the same way they used to be back in Jordan's day.

Yes...it really IS a sport!

By Danyell Briley

The only sports we Americans really participate in are the obvious football, basketball, baseball, soccer, golf, hockey and maybe a little lacrosse here and there. However, the lists of "top sports" vary around the world. Here's a look at some of the weirdest.

A bitter sweet Homecoming happened for the Spartans. The sweet - it was reunion time for the Spartan family as tons of alumni gathered at NSU to celebrate Homecoming. The blame game

The slow start by the Spartans proved to be costly. Down 21 to 0 the Spartans did not get their first, first down until late into the 2nd quarter. Frustration set in for most of the Spartan fans early and lasted for the entire game. The Spartans (2-5, 1-3 MEAC) fell 35-17 to the Hampton Pirates (5-1, 4-0 MEAC) on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Armstrong Stadium. With the offense unable to move the ball chants to take Dennis Brown out the game started right behind the Norfolk State bench. It started with one man yelling, "Put Dexter in coach, Brown ain't doin' nothing!"
