Norfolk State University's Alpha Epsilon Rho chapter of the National Broadcast Society with resumes, business cards, and other examples of personal experience in hand, recently journeyed to Atlanta, Ga. for a networking trip.
This advantageous trip, hosted by Paula Briggs, a mass communication professor at NSU, toured the thriving Atlanta media market. We toured such venues as Cox Media, CNN studios, V103 (The number one radio hip hop station in the nation), Radio One, and the Weather Channel. The trip was rich with networking opportunities because we not only met with people in a plethora of communication fields, but we also interacted with various members of the Norfolk State's Atlanta Alumni chapter. We as students found that along with networking, being in the right place at the right time was a major aspect of our trip.
Throughout the trip we were given internship opportunities, personal one on one job consultations, and much real world advice from the media professionals. In the field of mass communications your success is not solely based upon what you know but also who you know. Our daily interactions with media professionals opened the doorway to Atlanta, which is the number eight media market, to us. It was also refreshing to meet with alumni and witness how they spoke with such affinity as they recanted their memories of Norfolk State.
Needless to say, our trip was a great success, and I can only hope that Professor Briggs will continue to coordinate such trips in the future.
