One of the contestants briefly forgot the lines of the poem he was reciting, and another, senior journalism major Ashley Thomas, dropped her baton.
"I can understand everyone's feelings when I dropped it on the first toss," she explained, "yet what I believe what it comes down to is continuing on despite obstacles -a thought that one should carry with them throughout their life."
Toward the end of the pageant, the contestants were serenaded by Quinton George and Cassandra Payne with their rendition of, "When I First Saw You." The 2006-2007 Mr. and Miss NSU, Joseph Jefferson and Talia Fletcher also came to pass the torch on to this year's leaders. After a short delay, the anxious crowd watched as the judges revealed that the distinction of 2007-2008 Mr. and Miss NSU belonged to the baton-twirling Ashley Thomas and senior marketing major Ahmad Durant-Bey.
There were mixed reactions from the audience, including one from junior music media major Justin Jones.
I felt as if the judges made the wrong decision on the girls' side, because they based it too much on outward appearances," he said.
The new Miss NSU may have won the judges over with her perseverance after not catching her baton, and admits that there was a better competitor.
"Janique Evans definitely deserved to win that segment," Thomas said.
Evans did win a trophy for the talent competition, as well as others who excelled in each particular category. Second and first runner up awards were also given.
To participate in the pageant, each contestant had to have a cumulative 2.5 grade point average, among other requirements. The pageant was judged by NSU faculty within various departments, and NSU's president Carolyn W. Meyers watched as the 2007-2008 leaders were crowned.
